The precious little things in life
Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful. - Colossians 4:2
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Be still and know that I am God. - Psalm 46:10
Grace. Jesus' unfailing love. His provision. His sovereignty. Stars shining in the night sky. Sunsets. Sunrises. Blue skies. Coffee. Friends who love coffee. Flowers. New books. Pens that write smoothly. Journals. Sweet friendships. Warm showers. Endless supply of water. Blankets. Fuzzy socks. Adventures. New friendships. Old friends. Memories. Difficult seasons. Music. Bible in my own language. Sweatpants. Sweatshirts. God's strength. People who sit and talk with me, without a time limit. Trees. Lessons learned the hard way. Intentional conversations. Brothers and sisters whom remind me of truth. The ability to run and workout. Oceans. Warm vents. Jesus and the ability to fall into his arms at night and have him hold me. Countries that will forever have a place in my heart. Hurting heart. Cute coffee mugs. New beginnings.
I have always loved the little things in life. Anyone that spends time with me often, knows I love coffee but most importantly, I love having coffee with sweet friends and always with Jesus. Most everything that means a lot to me, is because of memories made along the way that has left a mark on my life in some way. While living in another country, I found that the little things that I had to be thankful for were what kept me going.
Little victories such as getting out of bed, speaking successfully in another language (even if it were just a short sentence), or going from one place to another without getting lost, or even times when I felt no anxiety but all peace. I would make little notes in my journal throughout the day that made me more thankful to live this life. When doing this, it helped me put things in perspective, pause and realize this life really is amazing.
I struggle a lot when it comes to life, I so desire to be with Jesus that in the times of waiting until the day I get to be with Him for eternity, I forget to be still and cherish the time He has given me here on Earth. The Lord is teaching me a lot about what it looks like to just be still before him and trust that He is sovereign and he will provide. He has given me strength that is not of my own, a peace that I cannot comprehend, love that is unfailing and never ending, and grace that is so amazing. I often times stop, with tear filled eyes, and ask God why he would still choose to love a sinner like me. I do not deserve to be called his child, nor do I deserve his love, or anything but Hell. Yet, in those moments of wondering why he would choose to make a way for me to know him, I feel him hug me tight and let me rest in Him. "For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only son, so that anyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) I hear him whisper, "because I love you, Sarah" and I am once again in awe of Him.
Maybe you're like me and just waking up and getting out of bed in the mornings is a victory, rather big or small. Maybe you need the reminder of all the things there are to be thankful for as we are passing through this life. I encourage you to grab a sticky note, notebook, or even the notes page in your phone, whatever is easiest, and write down things you are thankful for and small (or big) victories that have been accomplished each day. Find a place to just sit and be still before our creator and praise Him for never leaving our side, praise Him for the little things in life that make you appreciate the Life that was given to us. Cry out to Him if you need, but be sure to let Him hold you as you do.. And never underestimate the way a cup of coffee (or 10) and a sweet encouraging friend can bring you to appreciate life all the more.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others. - Philippians 2:1-4
